Main stems procumbent, with flattened erect branches in clumps; leaves in alternate opposing pairs (appearing as rows); sporangia on reduced leaves in cones.
This genus is included in Lycopodium by some authors.
About 16 species in all. 2 species in Britain, 1 in Ireland.
