Equisetum
Horsetails

Stems jointed, green, hollow, simple or branched at nodes; branches similar to stems but smaller. Leaves simple, very small, in whorls fused at their bases to form sheaths at nodes; sporangia in cones, which in some species are formed on tips of normal stems (occasionally on side branches), in others on separate unbranched non-green shoots, produced earlier in the season.

23 species, worldwide except for Australia and New Zealand; 8 species in Britain and Ireland; One species introduced (?) and naturalised although presumed to be formerly native.
