Small, mostly epiphytic or epilithic; rhizomes thin, creeping, glabrous; leaves simple to 4-pinnate, arranged singly along rhizome, thin and translucent - one-cell thick except along veins; sori enclosed in valve-like indusium developing at ends of veins on edge of blade.

About 300 species worldwide. Two species in Britain and Ireland.
