Osmunda
Rhizomes short, thick, erect, and may eventually form substantial raised clumps in old plants; leaves in spiral tufts, partly or fully dimorphic; sterile fronds 1-2 pinnate; veins free; fertile fronds may be partly or fully differentiated from sterile ones, the fertile part without green leafy tissue; sori massed along pinnule midribs, no indusium.

About 10 species, worldwide. One species in Britain and Ireland.
