Dryopteris affinis (Lowe) Fraser-Jenkin; D.pseudomas (Wollaston) Holub et Pouzar; D.borreri Newman Scaly Male Fern; Golden-scaled Male Fern; Golden Male Fern
The Dryopteris affinis group, or aggregate, contains four or more species in Britain and Ireland depending on which schema is followed. The system of Christopher Fraser-Jenkins (2007) defines affinis, borreri, cambrensis and pseudodisjuncta as species. Previously these were defined as either subspecies or morphotypes of affinis. They are further subdivided in subspecies, varieties or forms. More recently some of the subdivisions have been recognised as separate species (Sell and Murrell 2018). D. pseudodisjuncta was found in Britain after Fraser-Jenkins' paper was published. Another species, D. lacunosa, was described in 2011. Two other species not known from these islands also form part of this group: D. schorapensis and D. pontica. The system followed here is that of Fraser-Jenkins 2007, with the addition of D. lacunosa.
